OUR MISSION

HURO is the only conservation programme fully dedicated to the conservation of the Western Hoolock Gibbon.

The broad aim of the project is the conservation of the Western Hoolock Gibbon (ranked amongst the most endangered primate species in the world, IUCN, 2010) in the Northeastern Indian states. The Huro Programme actions include wildlife laws implementation, confiscation, habitat protection initiatives, research projects, rehabilitation and reintroduction programs.

In the focus of conservation efforts due to threats from habitat destruction, hunting and illegal poaching, we, have been pivotal in rescuing many gibbons through our Sonja Wildlife Rescue Unit. These initiatives are vital for the survival of the Western Hoolock Gibbon, ensuring they continue to be a part of India's rich biodiversity.

Rescue.

The rescued gibbons are provided with immediate medical attention to assess their health and treat any injuries or illnesses. Consequently, they receive a balanced diet and our vets monitor them closely to ensure they are adapting well to their temporary sanctuary. Our experts meticulously designs rehabilitation programs tailored to each gibbon’s needs.

Rehabilitate.

Our efforts have led to the release of some gibbons from captivity into their natural environments, a crucial step in preserving their population and ecological role. Such releases are carefully managed, considering the complex social structures and dietary needs of the gibbons, to ensure their survival and adaptation in the wild.

Release.
